Craft Cluster Initiative – Exploring India’s Living Craft Traditions

At Satyam Fashion Institute, Noida, we believe that true design innovation is rooted in understanding tradition. Through our immersive Craft Cluster Initiative, students travel to various states across India to study, document, and engage with regional craft communities and their indigenous artisanal practices. This hands-on field experience exposes students to diverse traditional crafts — from Pattachitra painting in Odisha and Rice Straw Craft in Kerala, to Kalamkari in Andhra Pradesh, Bandhani in Gujarat, and Chikankari in Uttar Pradesh. By interacting directly with local artisans, students gain deep insights into the cultural context, techniques, materials, and sustainability embedded in each craft form.

    Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Documentation of heritage crafts and artisan lifestyles
  • Understanding handmade processes, tools, and natural materials
  • Exploring the design potential of traditional techniques in contemporary contexts
  • Fostering ethical design thinking and craft preservation
  • Building collaborative relationships between future designers and craft communities

This initiative helps students bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern design, promoting sustainable fashion, craft revival, and culturally conscious creation — all essential for today's global design industry.
